Description

Heart disease and chronic kidney disease frequently occur together and share many of the same risk factors, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. People living with established cardiovascular disease — such as a prior heart attack, stroke, or peripheral artery disease — or with chronic kidney disease are at significantly elevated risk of further serious events, including additional heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, and progressive kidney decline. Despite the range of standard treatments available, many people continue to experience these events, underscoring the need for new treatment approaches.

GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of medications that mimic a naturally occurring hormone involved in regulating blood sugar, appetite, and body weight. Evidence from other medications in this class has demonstrated meaningful reductions in cardiovascular events in people with established heart disease. This study investigated whether a new once-daily oral tablet in the same class could reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular and kidney events in people with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and/or chronic kidney disease — including participants both with and without type 2 diabetes.

Eligibility checklist

✓ Aged 50 years or older

✓ Have established cardiovascular disease — such as a prior heart attack, coronary stent or bypass surgery, ischaemic stroke, carotid artery disease with significant narrowing, or peripheral artery disease — OR have chronic kidney disease (CKD) confirmed by kidney function and urine tests

✓ Body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m² or higher at screening

✓ If you have type 2 diabetes: blood sugar (HbA1c) of 10% or lower, and on a stable diabetes medication regimen for at least 90 days before screening

✓ No recent major cardiovascular event (heart attack, stroke, acute coronary syndrome, or arterial revascularisation procedure) within 60 days before joining the study

✓ No history of type 1 diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, medullary thyroid cancer, or kidney dialysis in the 90 days before joining

✓ No history of gastric bypass or restrictive bariatric surgery

✓ Able to attend in-person clinic visits in Ipswich, QLD

✓ Willing and able to provide written informed consent
