Heart Failure & Obesity Study

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction — sometimes called HFpEF — is a form of heart failure in which the heart muscle contracts normally but has become stiff and does not fill with blood properly. When combined with obesity, it can cause significant breathlessness, fatigue, and a reduced ability to exercise or carry out daily activities. Despite how common this condition is, there are currently very limited treatment options available.

This study is investigating whether a once-weekly injectable treatment can improve heart function, symptoms, and quality of life in people with this type of heart failure and obesity. It is an area of significant unmet clinical need, and findings from this study could shape future treatment options for thousands of Australians.

Participants receive close cardiac monitoring throughout, the investigational treatment at no cost, and reimbursement for time and travel at each clinic visit.

 You may be eligible to join this study if you meet the criteria below. Our team will confirm your eligibility at a screening visit — you do not need to be certain of every item before registering interest

• • Diagnosed with heart failure with a preserved or mildly reduced ejection fraction (EF above 40%), confirmed by echocardiogram
  • BMI of 30 or above (obesity)
  • Elevated NT-proBNP levels - your GP or cardiologist can arrange this test
  • At least one additional feature such as reduced kidney function, elevated urine albumin, or a recent hospitalisation for heart failure

• A screening visit to confirm your eligibility — including blood tests, an ECG, and a review of any prior echocardiogram — at no cost to you
• If eligible, you will be randomly assigned to receive either the investigational once-weekly injection or a placebo
• Regular clinic visits every six months for cardiac assessments, blood tests, weight, and quality of life questionnaires
• Phone check-ins between visits to monitor your safety and symptoms
• All study medications, tests, and consultations are provided at no cost to you
• Reimbursement for your time and reasonable travel costs at each visit
• You may withdraw at any time, for any reason, without affecting your usual medical care

Early access: Access an investigational treatment not yet publicly available, at no cost.

Expert cardiac care: Regular monitoring by our cardiology-experienced clinical team at two Queensland locations.

Reimbursement: Receive reimbursement for your time and reasonable travel per visit.
